Just thought I'd drop in the origins of chutney music...as I know it. Growing up, I was taught (by my nani) that chutney music was originally religious songs that were sung on lawa night and times during weddings when the women were gathered together. It was old kabir rhaags and shiva bhajans that were sung and danced to lewdly. After that it transformed into songs that were sung to make fun of the bride or groom's family, "dulaha ki maiya chinar" (the groom's mother is a *****.) Then came the advent of sundar popo with nani and nana....he became super popular and became known, at least in T'dad, as a song thief. He would steal the local ppls song and had access to record it and then claim it as his own. Even when he died, t'dadians didn't care too much about his work or his "thiefery" - I made that one up. Ppl like Anand Yankaran, Rakesh Yankaran, Boodram Holass, Premattie Bheem and a host of others kept the singing of religious songs popular during the 90's - eg. Nanda Baba (a huge hit during the 90's is a bhajan telling a story of Krishna). Now it was Babla and Kanchan that popularised the remaking of hindi songs with bhojpuri lyrics and then the new chutney/soca artists started remaking Babla and Kanchan songs and that then led to them remaking original hindi songs with new lyrcis...kind of one thing led to a next. I guess Babla and Kanchan didn't remake enough songs. The new way of singing songs with soca soundin and reggae soundin beats came from the bands of the new era that sort of cut out the remix dj and just remade the song with new beats (this was during the late 90's) ex. Gemini band and dil-e-nadan. And after that, in the 2000's came this new music. Its all been a watered down process. Whew! I'm tired....someone pleae correct me on any of this ....I could be wrong about the whole thing. Lemme go reminisce about attending chutney shows when the great boodram holass and premattie bheem and the yankarans rocked the stage...I even saw kanchan and popo...I was there for it all! Disclaimer: Even though I know its garbage....I still sing along and wine on some bottom to these new songs. I LOVE IT!
Sometimes I think Babla and Kanchan be making up words, when I listen to them lol. Idk about you guys but I think they just took words from the original Indian chune and put their own words in them. Im not hating on Babla and Kanchan, because I enjoy their work, but are those real words ma bro? Cus I never heard of bhojpuri lyrics before. Its sounds like a type of food they serve at ah jhandi.
LMAO sundar popo is a teeef :| LOOL who wudda expected that but alrightt but sundar still sing nice songs can't lie Also Rush and Marry is from Duniya Banewale and the song I Doh Know by Raymond Ramnarine is based from Hum Dono Do Premi Oh yeah also Sharon Come Leh we Go is from Sona Come Leh we go by Lakhan karriya does anyone know whatever happened to that guy? just wondering
