To speed up your computer, try:
-Tuneup Utilities (search for it on here) and/or
    -Defragging
    -Running antispyware software
    -Cleaning your registry
-Closing programmes you dont need open
    -Uninstalling programmes you dont need

    Computer Management:
    - Malwarebytes Anti-Malware: Best free scanner out there, everyone should have it downloaded and ran from time to time. Also offers fileassassin*, which is mainly aimed for professional use.
    - Ccleaner*: Registry and browser cleaner, can also un-install programs, manage startup programs and has a disk cleaner (since 3.0).
    - F-Secure Online Scanner: Best online scanner currently available, runs through java and is free. Because the program isnt run directly from the machine, it can detect programs which have stealthed themselves from the AV programs.
    - HijackThis**: It can be used as improved task manager, but it includes very professional tools which shouldnt be used without proper knowledge (will cause permanent harm to OS if used wrong).
    - XP Quickfix*: Used to repair simple windows errors
    - W7 Quickfix*: Used to repair simple windows errors
    - Winsock XP fix*: This small tool will repair winsock in XP machines if it has been corrupted by something, symptoms in most cases: you receive TCP errors, cannot connect to any addresses even if every web configuration is right.
    - Defraggler*: Light and configurable defragmentation tool for Windows.
    - Netscan*: Scans specified network range for hosts and gives info about them, also has a bunch of network administrator tools.
    - Ninite: When doing clean install of OS or simply installing multiple programs, this is the way to go if you want it easy.
    - Driverpack Solution: Best driver tool out there. It detects which your hardware and installs drivers based on that, it has everything in it already so you dont need internet connection when using it. It is also free.

never take advice from someone who can't spell words correctly or type with correct grammar and punctuation. you must be a computer idiot.

    Now..

have a good antivirus and you wont need no firewall at all. I recommend avast home edition as it PREVENTS you from getting the virus, unlike others that only pick up the virus once it's in your system. it wont slow your system down, ever. anyone I recommended this to can back this up.

Next, as said before, get TuneUp Utilities and use that. The directions for it is simple and the program basically walks you through everything so even if you're as computer illiterate as anthony01, you'll still be able to use it. This program will let u disable startup programs, change your theme settings to increase performance, make changes to your network settings for faster downloads/uploads, uninstall programs, clean your registry and a bunch of other good shit. Use it.

Thirdly, I noticed systems running windows 7 don't really need to be defragged as we had to with vista, xp and anything before. You can consolidate your files to the outer of the disk platters for a little quicker read times but you prolly wont notice it anyways.

After you do that get the latest version of firefox and download the Adblock plus extension. It blocks embedded ad's on web pages. If you wanna download shit off of youtube or any other site that streams music use the video downloadhelper extension.

Software-wise, that's about all you can do. The next step would be hardware upgrades. Never reboot your computer because it's slow, just get rid of all the bullshit and configure it right.

All of the stuff I reccomended are free, and prolly the best. TuneUp Utitlities is good too, but I think you have to pay for that. Crack/Keygen it if you wish. It's not like most of you guys are a saints, with all the pirated music you guys download from this site anyways :p

Also, I agree with this. Even though I'm not good at grammar myself, I at least try.

nobody cares what you are or what you have running. your entitled to your opinion but you're giving him and anyone else reading that bad information. if you have to disable services, get a firewall and have the idea that an anti virus slows your computer down, then from this n can draw these conclusions

    1. you have a slow ass piece of shit computer
    2. you constantly download bullshit in which you need a firewall in place to prevent viruses/adware/spyware from having connectivity
and 3. you prolly only used symantec branded products as your anti virus solution to say that ittl slow it down.

all in all, you really don't know shit. give thanks that i'm taking the time out of my day to educate you. now prove me wrong.

i'd always refrain from using any tweaks if you don't know what you're doing, they can severely mess up your pc (some of them).

to temporarily speed up your PC, I recommend deleting any rarely used files. think of it this way, the more files that the pc has to search through, the longer time it will take to retrieve them for usage. also, use the default system tools to your advantage. at least monthly, run a disk defrag and a disk cleanup. and about every 3 months, clean your temporary folder by going to start > run > and type in "%temp%". (the time period between cleanings depends on how frequently you're on the internet/using your pc) the only third-party program I use to clean my PC is called Glary Utilities. it cleans up your registry, fixes broken shortcuts, even cleans your temp folder for you among other things.

contrary to the schtupidness that anthony is posting up, get yourself a good anti-virus with a resident/real-time/monitoring shield. A resident/real-time/monitoring shield is something that constantly monitors programs running on your computer. if an unsigned file tries to do something out of its permissions/boundaries/out of the ordinary, it will warn you. it will also tell you whether or not certain files contain malicious files. AVs aren't always perfect, sometimes they will alert you to false positives. It is up to you to police your internet usage, and read ALL comments/reviews when downloading anything from a website you don't trust. Also, don't worry about your privacy being invaded because you can opt out of having any malicious files found on your computer sent to the AV company. (It's better to allow those files to be sent to the AV company so that it can prevent future infections. They don't take any incriminating information about you if you read their privacy statements, so you have no worries if you torrent/do anything illegal, etc.)I suggest Avast! free since I've yet to have a problem with them, and they're less bloaty than the next free choice, AVG 2011. in the event that malicious files do get into your PC, I recommend using Malware Bytes to clean it out. I've downloaded it, and yet to use it on my home PC. But, I have used it on many of my clients computers and it has worked wonders. boot in safe mode, and do a scan and I can guarantee that the infection will be gone. Malware Bytes are for the most extreme of situations such as a virus that restricts you from using the internet, causes pop-ups, etc. (hopefully it never comes to that :p)

i could go on forever but for the sake of the internet, i'll keep it short. just make sure you maintain your pc and don't let things pile up. but also, sometimes it's better to backup all your stuff and have a fresh start. it's a lot easier to format a hard drive than it is to make a slow pc faster. (without adding parts)

if you mean adding parts to your PC, this is a whole different issue. if it is, reply to this thread specifying what route you want to take.
