I have a piece of sh-t laptop from a while ago, nothing is wrong with it except for the wireless connection. With my old ISP set-up, I was paying for basic that gave me 18mbps D/L speed and 512kbps U/L speed and I was using a TP-Link router which worked perfectly. Recently I've upgraded to Rogers Extreme package which now gives me 28mbps D/L speed and 2mbps U/L speed and they also sent me a new modem which also work as a router but my laptop is not detecting any connection. I have to move my laptop around to a certain spot before i get good connection (sometimes I don't get any connection at all) and take note that I am in the same room as the modem/router. Even if I move my laptop by an INCH, I will lose connection! What is the problem? Is it the network card? P.S. My computer works fine, My phone gets wifi, even our Smart Hub TV downstairs connects no problem!
Try going into the router's settings and setting the channel option from the default "automatic" to a specific number, like 5. Does this occur with other wifi devices?
Try changing the channel setting and let me know. If that doesn't work.. Save the headache and get a USB Wifi Card http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3970955&CatId=2704
try changing the wifi ch to like 11 if your phone works then laptop Should work too unless its one them dell window xp crap lol if it still happens then might be a outdated network card
I don't know how to change any router settings, you're asking the wrong person to perform this procedure lol. I don't know anything about CH 11, 7, 12, 6 etc...
connect one of your computers to the modem using a ethernet cable. Then type 192.168.1.1 in your address bar and configure the settings from there. Most ISP's that offer modems with built in routers don't allow u to access the settings anyway, so if anything, just give them a call, and tell them to set the channel for you from their end. If not, like said, get a 15-20 dollar USB Network Card
try updating the wireless driver if you haven't done so already; no need to mess with the channels since the rest of the devices are connecting without any issues.
I had issues with my router where my Macbook would have problems having a consistent connection, and all my other devices worked fine, and setting the channel from automatic to a specific channel fixed the problem.. Idk why, but it did... just sayin!
