Did anyone ever had their external hard drive stop working? Mine does not even sound it is spinning.

    Any help would be appreciated.

the same thing happened to me... when i opened up the case i saw that the actual hard drive was not connect to the platter, simply just push it back in. if thats not the case, try making sure everything is plugged in.

If you did all that and it didn't work then you're out of luck? Maybe so or maybe not.

There's another trick if none of that works but its a risky one.

What you do is open the case of the external and open the case of your computer and try to connect it directly as a secondary hard drive. I would not recommend this if you're not very computer suave.

NOTE: Before you do this you must know there's a chance that the external will be fried completely after you've done this but if it does work it will not work for long, SO BEFORE YOU START MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOMEWHERE TO BACK UP YOUR DATA.

could have overheated and the disk detached from the spindle.

actually i don't see how the platters could have come off the spindle, there secured down pretty good with screws. one of my externals crash before too, it started making weird noises , as if the the read/write heads were crashing into the platters, but i was able to back up all my music and get another external in time.you said your hard drive doesn't seem to spin, but does it make a noise? any small type of noise, telling you that power is going through it.

could also be the external hard drive case and the chip that runs the hard drive in it, like rookie said u can take out the bare hard drive and hook it up to your computer and see if it works

if all fails, try droppin it on the ground and retry. not so hard as 2 smash it but 2 give it a good "shake up". worked for me once awhile ago (a technician actually recommend it) BUT ONLY DO THIS AS A LAST RESORT!!!!
