This LP features selections by contestants of the Mastana Bahar Cultural Pageant created in 1975 by Sham Mohammed. It has now become one of the foremost shows in Trinidad & Tobago. The two main features of the Pageant is ‘’A Queen Contest and a Local Song Contest’’. In the former, contestants are required to parade in Saree and Evening Wear whereas in the latter contestants are required to compose and render a Song on the TV show Mastana Bahar or on any other topic. It is hoped that this LP will be appreciated, as it clearly demonstrates a new and vigorous dimension in the promotion of Indian Culture in Trinidad & Tobago. It is not the intention of those concerned in any way to denigrate the importance of classical or any other type of Indian Singing. Surely, singing must have its repertoire as indeed dancing and music. The tastes of people vary. Some go for the devotional and others for the modern faster type evidenced in this LP. Moreover, these selections reflect the spirit and vitality of Trinidad and Tobago, a characteristic that is so well know. Congratulations must be extended to the artistes for their efforts in composing the songs on this LP. This is a development for which all Trinidadians should be proud. It augurs well for the future as we seek to do our own thing. Congratulations must also be extended to Harry Mahabir and B.W.I.A’s National Indian Orchestra for the splendid musical arrangements provided. Finally, congratulations must be accorded to Mr. Moean Mohammed for his pioneering efforts in putting Local Songs on record. This LP, produced by him, will certainly go a long way in promoting the Talent of Trinidad & Tobago and at the same time generating respect and appreciation for the artistes and Indian Culture. I miss watching Mastana Bahar and Indian Cultural Magazine Every Saturday and Sunday. Good old days. True Cultural Music and Creative. If anyone remember one time in Mastana Bahar was a band with only old ladies dancing and singing. A Memory will never die. They look like my Grandma with glasses lol
