There is no problem in doing this, the only thing you have to make sure is that the HDD that you put in meets Sony's specifications.

You can put in any HDD as long as it is a SATA 2.5" @ 5400 RPM.

in the system settings, There is a back up option. Perform that. Your external must be on the Fat32 format inorder to be recognized.

bro, don't waste your money. you don't need to buy a new hard drive.

but you need an external hard drive that you can completely wipe and format it as FAT32.

if you have an empty external hard drive, with enough space, you don't need to buy anything.

    are you using vista?

that may be the main reason.

if it's possible, try to format it with a pc that is running a different OS, since on Vista, they're trying to push the exFAT file system.

but do be advised, when backing up your PS3. Any file that is larger than 4GB will not be possible to move to the external due to the limitations of the FAT32 file system. (that's just a limitation of FAT32, I don't know if PS3's backup utility has a workaround for this which allows you to do so, trying doesn't hurt)

if you don't have access to a PC running an OS other than Vista, then you're going to have to format it through command prompt. I don't know how comfortable you are with doing that. just tell me if you can try it on another OS, otherwise reply and tell me so I can instruct you on how to format the hard drive using command prompt.

I had a PS3 80GB hard disk i replaced it with a 640GB WD 2.5" SATA 9.5mm 5400 rpm 8MB its best to use a hard disk with the same rpm like the original PS3 disk
I had a 250GB NTFS external drive and with PartitionMagic i made a 100GB FAT32 partition for the PS3 backup after the backup i removed the partition with PartitionMagic. Did this on my windows 7 64 bit laptop.
I don't know if exFAT can be read with PartitionMagic but its worth a try
    Hope this helps
