Western Digital is BOSS. Their warranty is unsurpassed. I had an external My Book from them from 3 years ago. The Firewire 800 port started to act up. Requested a RMA and they replaced it at no charge to me. Even after the 5 year warranty, they'll give you a discount on their products.

If you have a Mac with FW800 (if not it still has eSATA and USB) My Book is the way to go to fit the budget. I just checked the WDOutlet and they got a 3TB for $160.

Even the new USB 3.0 2TB is $139.

Any hdd will work on PC and Mac as long as the partition and format is correct. Just make sure you get a high rpm drive.

Get a Western Digital My Book. I've still have mine since 2009 and I haven't had any problems.

seagate go flex is the way to go ! I had my 1 TB for almost a year and its fair to say I'm not 'careful' with it. Its been dropped a few times and abused a bit but the thing still works like it should. Its very fast !

    False.

You can find the same sizes for both Western Digital and Seagate, plus other brands. And the highest size you can get in a consumer external HDD is 4TB these days..

The best brands to buy from would probably be Seagate and Western Digital. They're essentially the same in quality. Thats not saying that no other company is good however.

As for specific model, just get whatever you find a deal on lol, as long as it has enough space.

Dont even bother with hdd anymore. That technology is soon to be outdated. Be one step ahead of the game and get a solid state external drive. A little on the expensive side as of now but in a couple months coat per gb is gonna drop

i doubt the price will drop that quickly in a couple mths.
you can get 3TB spindle drives for around 150$, 150 barely gets you 256MB in SSD.
that is 10times more space for the price. people who need storage space aren't looking
    at SSDs

Also the SSD aren't going to last as long as a plater drive. Every time you write to the SSD, it's life degrades since it's all flash memory.

Western Digital are not bad for their price/capacity value. I have a 1 TB USB 3.0 compliant WD and I've not been disappointed with the speed and simplicity of the software.

get a western digital drive imho. if longevity is what you are looking for you could always buy a internal western digital black drive and get an external case for it.
