Hmm, you said it's mp4 meaning it supposed to have the subs automatically in the movie.
Like when you play it you should be able to enable the subs. Maybe I'm wrong.

I dunno about the ps3 business, but if you wanted to play it on your laptop, then you'd need VLC (its free). Just make sure the subtitle file is in the same folder as the film, and also with the exact same file name.

Why go thru all the trouble to make it play on your ps3?
Just connect your laptop to your hd tv thru hdmi cable & you're good to go.
That's how I watch my movies.

I've done this before, its very simple but takes time to encode. head over to http://www.videohelp.com/tools/XviD4PSP and download the application. all you have to do is select the movie as the source video, and select the srt file as the subtitle. Then hit encode and within a few hours you should have an mp4 with the subtitles hard coded into it. However there will be no option of turning the subtitles off, they will always be on and will play on any device capable of playing mp4s. I recommend setting this up and letting it encode overnight, that way it wont be a big inconvenience.
