    External HDD Problems

I have a seagate 1tb portable external hdd. It recently told me i have to scan and fix for certain problems. When i tried to continue without scanning it wouldnt allow me to open my hdd. so i did the scan and fix and it allowed me to open my hdd, but now my music sounds all messed up and my pictures are messed up also. is there anything i can do to save all my data? I really hope to get this fixed soon because im djing a party this weekend!

Same shit happened to me. Now when you say all your files are messed up, what do you mean? Because I know what to do if its giving you the same problems I was having.

    Re: External HDD Problems

Aight well what I did was I copied my HDD to my PC's HDD, and then formatted the external and transferred everything back to the external. If you want to see if it solves the problem before you do that whole process, drag one song to your desktop from your external, delete if off your external and then drag it back to your external from your desktop, and see if it plays properly. If that fixes it then yeah do the entire process.

PS- Always safely remove your external devices. If it doesn't remove, shut the entire computer down before unplugging it. It's worth it.

I will deff try that, i ordered a new hdd, so when i get that i will do that, thanks for the advice bro

it wont let me delete anything off my hdd, and when i drag a file to my desktop and play it, it sounds the same way...and when i also do the scan to automatically fix errors, it only goes to a certain point and stops, when i scan for bad sectors, it says i must scan to automatically fix errors, im confused, and i deffinatly dont want to loose my long years of collecting music

You tried playing them with a different software? What about a different computer?

    Ok couple of issues here.

You need to isolate your PC being the problem, try playing an mp3 on your external drive on another PC or upload to google play or w/e and see if it plays there.

If it plays right on another PC, then the prob is your current PC.
If it doesn't play right on another PC, still skips or w/e, then the prob is the hard drive. I'd recommend you back that shit up to some other drive and double check your serial number for warranty, you would be surprised how often this happens (not to mention how long the warranty is on these external drives, mines came with 5 years).

Report back and let me know, I'll help you.

why did you create two threads?

your disk drive have bad sectors. everything you claimed messed up sounds about right. try to recover whatever files you can and save it on another hard drive. don't write any files onto the hard drive because it will be harder or even impossible to recover the files.

if all else fails, look into those data recovery services; there isn't a nicer way to say this but you're screwed.
i sorted that "ticking" sound by swapping the seagate enclosure with with an external enclosure, didn't hear a tick or tock from that bastard after that.

over time the circuitry powering those enclosures wear out so i definitely agree with TMP on getting a cheap hard drive caddy (20 bucks on amazon or so) and just get the actual drive out of the enclosure and mount it on the caddy. Either way, the ticking sound is an early indication to mechanical failure.

If you like to check your HDD life and status, go check an application in the WD, the application is called S.M.A.R.T it will check the HDD and tell you if you need to do a backup because the HDD will fail or not
