Hey guys....I have a Dell XPS 8920. I need more ram/memory up to 16 GB. Currently I have 8 GB ram. Can someone recommend me which ram would go best with this? Thanks. System information Computer model - XPS 8920 System Type x64-based PC Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700 CPU @ 3.60GHz, 3600 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s) Memory specifications Installed Physical Memory (RAM) - 8.00 GB Slots - Four DIMM slots Type - UDIMM• DDR4 Speed - 2400 MHz Configurations supported 8 GB, 16 GB, 24 GB, 32 and 64 GB
How do I put this? Do I need to purchase 1x 16GB or 1x 8GB? If I purchase 1x 16GB, can I keep my 8GB which would make it 24 GB? I am confused....
I highly recommend against mixing memory for various reasons. You have two options: 1. Purchase another 8GB module of the exact memory installed 2. Replace current memory with the following 16GB (2 x 8GB): https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-16gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820231941?&quicklink=true
So I be taking out my original 8 GB and install this 16GB with 2 8GB you recommended? also, is that going to affect my HD, do i need to backup my data to do this?
Correct. Use slots DIMM1 and DIMM2 for installation as stated on XPS 8920 Service Manual. No, but have a backup ready in case you have a smoke show.
Hey MP bro...I purchased the one you recommended "G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB)" & installed it...The speed showing is 2133...it should be 3200....how do i do this? give me some step by step instructions... thanx
Is it a good idea to overclock the memory in BIOS? I noticed my laptop which is also 16GB has the same speed 2133.
Not in 2020; I doubt Dell would allow you do any type of overclocking on an XPS. Overclocking is primarily done among gamers and usually using a higher-end motherboard.
The RAM depends on what you want to do with your computer, if you're DJing, then go for the 16 GB RAM (if you can afford it). For Photo/Video editing, use a 16 (if you can afford it, again). Hopefully this could help.
