Hey People, So, Yesterday I was doing a ton of research on Poornima. Found out her full name is Poornima Shrestha and sometimes she is known as Sushma. I gathered some recent pictures of her nowadays. Also, I read many biographies about her on Wikipedia and some other sites. However, none seem to mention Her Place of Birth! She has done plenty of interviews on YouTube. She can speak and sing in Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Nepali, and Hindi. But Where is she from? Where was she born? I am only familiar with her popularity in the West Indies. Also, Would you consider Poornima to be a Chutney Artist? A Hindi Artist? Or Both? Does anyone know where she was born? I see her being associated with Trinidad quite often in the Caribbean Community. There is not enough information about her presence in the Caribbean. Her chutney albums, like Raja Na Awejai, are UNHEARD OF outside the Caribbean-Chutney Community. I've read through multiple websites about her Music and absolutely none of them mention anything about her Chutney Songs. Her voice is Iconic! Unmatched! Raja Na Awejai (Dual Album with Vina Khetani) This is Poornima in her youth. Her father's name was Bholanath, he was also a Music Composer. No biography confirms if they were from The Caribbean. The Only Albums that Wikipedia, Itunes, and Other Websites confirm are: 1. Simply Darun 2. Ankh Micholi 3. Balma Bada Bavaali 4. Jaal 5. Bhatta Saheb 6. Badal 7. Jogan 8. Patanga 9. Shagufa Nothing else is Listed. However, we know she did albums like Raja Na Awejai, Pyar Mein Ik Chumma De De, and many more. If anyone knows more information about Poornima please reply to this thread. There are sooo many great songs she has made throughout the years and they are going unrecognized. She deserves to be credited for all her music. People should know more about her and especially her history in Chutney Music.
I believe she is Nepali. You're right that the chutney songs she recorded are unknown outside of Indo-Caribbean communities. She is better known in South Asia for Hindi film songs like "Chane Ke Khet Mein" (from the 1994 film Anjaam), which was picturized on Madhuri Dixit. Not sure how she came to know of the Caribbean or record chutney. Thanks for collecting this info.
I'd say she'd be a sort of "hybrid" artist - so neither fully chutney or hindi. Similar to Kanchan in the 80s, where she started in bollywood and transitioned to chutney.
Poornima is Nepali but she was born as Sushma Shrestha in Mumbai on the 6th of September 1960. She did many songs, I am not too sure about her Caribbean presence unfortunately
