My cousin gave my an external hard drive he bought a while ago and to get the data. it has a bunch of music on it and stuff.
So i tried plugging it into windows xp and vista and the drive was not recognized. I went on the manufacturers website to find that they only provide the driver for windows 98. I reformatted my desktop to windows 98, installed the driver, and found the same problem. The drive was not being recognized. becoming frustrated, i took the drive out of the enclosure and found it to be a IDE desktop drive. Its a WD800. I bought a SATA/IDE to USB adapter so i wouldnt have to open my desktop and stuff to access the drive. STILL, i have no luck in accessing the drive! It shows i have a USB Mass Storage Device connected but there is nothing in my computer and no autoplay comes up. Any ideas?

make sure that second drive is set to "slave" the jumpers in the back.
-right click on my computer, go to manage then select Disk Management see if the drive is in there. report back (try this on xp)

try rebooting the computer, unplug it plug it back in a few times and see if that helps other than that, try and run a disk recovery software on it, check i posted some. good luck!

Jumper settings don't have anything to do with it if you're using it on USB. That only matters if you are using it on an IDE connection. The only thing is if the drive requires a jumper to be set in the parking space for it to work (which is rare).

I know u don't want to do this but it might be you're only choice so try plugging the drive directly into the motherboard IDE or SATA and see if it works. Most likely the drive is busted from everything you've said. If it comes to that there are places that do data recovery they'll open the drive and take the platters out and recover the data for you but you will need another drive for them to copy the data onto.

Put simply its REALLY expensive. It can range from $300 up to the $1000's depending on what exactly is wrong with the drive. I don't know if your data is worth that much. That's for you to decide.

    More complicated explanation:
If there are bad sectors or corrupted file systems then it can be recovered in about two days. Thats easily fixed and its called a logical problem. They just copy it to cds/dvds or another hard drive.

Then theres physical problems meaning some hardware part isnt working properly, which is the more expensive recovery option. So they have to get parts from another hard drive thats almost identical to repair the old hard drive.

^Some guy in my IT department used to do this stuff. lmao I know you didnt need the long explanation...

    EDIT:
    http://www.acsdata.com/
They evaluate the drive for free and if they can't get the data they don't charge you anything. Shipping the drive obviously is on you though.
