I've noticed lately that my cpu usage is quite high over 50% and before its was always about 10% to lower. I also realized that the process using up the cpu is "wmiprvse.exe" Anyone know anything about that process?

That process is a safe process that belongs to Microsoft, however bro, it might contain a virus since its eating up a lot of your RAM. Read this to find out if it does contain a virus:

Are you running Windows Desktop Gadgets... like Drives Meter or Network Meter ?
Windows Desktop Gadget hogs processor by sending queries constantly about hardware..

Get rid of them and Disable Desktop Gadgets

To disable , simply open up Control Panel and type “features” into the search box.
Find the link for “Turn Windows features on or off” and open it.
Remove the check box from Windows Gadget Platform, click the OK button and restart your computer..

I've been using the cpu gauge gadget forever and its always been using less than 10% but all of a sudden the cpu just spiked.

Did you try running a full scan with Malware Bytes Anti-Malware to see if anything like that process is detected?

You can use this to see more information on it:
