The name Yankarran is a household word in the Indian Community, and this singer who has never had any formal schooling in music and singing enjoys a degree of popularity with young and old alike that is perhaps unrivalled in the history of Indian Classical singing in Trinidad. Born Thirty-four (34) years ago at Waterloo Road, Carapichaima, Yankarran spent most of his childhood days at Barataria where he received his elementary school education. It was here at the age of fourteen (14) that he gained the attention of the famous Naya Zamana Orchestra, which band he immediately joined. At Sixteen (16) he made his first record ''Hindu Muslim''. This record together with his later frequent appearances on Kamaluddin Mohammed's radio programmes firmly established Yankarran as an outstanding classical and semi classical singer. At the age of Nineteen (19) Yankarran returned to Carapichaima and formed his own Orchestra. From then he has won many singing competitions and created many admirers in British Guiana and Surinam earning for himself in the process the esteem of being regared as the ''Idol of the West Indies'' In this album, the collection of songs illustrate the magic in Yankarran's voice, his effortless manner of rendition, as well as his repetoire as a singer.
